The billions in subsidies aimed at reducing energy consumption and strengthening the role of renewable energy sources have not yet yielded results

Various programmes funded by the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) between 2018 and 2025 were intended to reduce energy consumption in Czech industry and services, increase power generation from renewable sources, and lower the energy performance of buildings of state organisations. An audit by the Supreme Audit Office (SAO) revealed that set targets had not been met.

Procurement of helicopters for the Czech Police Aviation Service delayed by eight years. Prague hangar has been in a state of disrepair for 20 years

For eight years now, the Czech Police Aviation Service should have been operating at least three new light helicopters to provide a 24-hour search and rescue standby service, as well as at least two heavy-lift helicopters capable of transporting entire specialist police or fire brigade units.

The new Member of the SAO Board will be Petr Přikryl (aged 52), an attorney-at-law. Members of Parliament elected him in a secret ballot on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, with 89 of the 159 members present voting in favour of his election.

Clean mobility is developing in the Czech Republic, however, it continues to lag behind the European average

The support provided by the Ministry of Transport (MoT) and the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT) between the years 2019 and 2025 has contributed to the development of clean mobility — that is, low-emission transportation — in the Czech Republic. However, the number of electric vehicles in the Czech Republic continues to lag behind the European average.

Memorandum of Understanding between the Supreme Audit Office of the Czech Republic and the UAE Accountability Authority

Miloslav Kala, President of the Supreme Audit Office of the Czech Republic, and HE Humaid Obaid Abushibs, Chairman of the UAE Accountability Authority, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday, 18 June 2026, at the SAO headquarters in Prague to promote cooperation in the field of public sector auditing.

The introduction of the European Train Control System has improved safety, but has not yet led to faster service or increased track capacity

Unlike in many other EU countries, the railway signalling systems in the Czech Republic were outdated and did not allow for the control of train movements or the ability to intervene in their operation. The ongoing gradual integration of the European Train Control System (ETCS) onto Czech railways is expected to bring about a positive change.

The government is failing to manage public investments effectively. This leads to a waste of resources and increased project costs.

The aim of public investment is to strengthen the economic development and competitiveness of the country. The government spends hundreds of billions of crowns on investments every year. In 2025 alone, that figure exceeded CZK 400 billion. Yet the management of public investments has long been failing.

It is not possible to reliably assess whether the Ministry of the Environment’s subsidies have contributed to improved stormwater management

The multi-year drought from 2015 to 2018 highlighted the problem of poor stormwater management in urbanised areas of the Czech Republic. Subsidies* from the Ministry of the Environment (MoE) totalling CZK 1.8 billion were intended to help improve this management.

The new Members of the SAO Board will be attorney Radovan Suchánek (aged 53) and Member of Parliament Josef Kott (aged 55). Members of Parliament elected them in a secret ballot on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, with 102 MPs voting for Radovan Suchánek and 131 MPs voting for Josef Kott out of the 166 MPs present.

Hospitals used funds allocated for recovery from the COVID-19 crisis to purchase equipment they did not need and hardly ever used

Between 2020 and 2023, the Czech Republic received funds from the European REACT-EU investment instrument to support recovery from the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Czech government decided that most of these funds would be used for healthcare projects.

SAO President at a meeting with Ambassadors: The EU’s concept of sustainability is at odds with rising debt

“In the European Union’s economy, we have ceased to respect economic principles. Sustainability, as the EU conceives it, is at odds with rising debt. We are taking on more and more debt, thereby depleting the resources of future generations.” This was stated by Miloslav Kala, President of the Supreme Audit Office (SAO), on Wednesday, 22 April 2026, at the now-traditional meeting with EU Ambassadors.

State equity interests are not managed in accordance with the rules set out by the government itself. Seven of the 21 measures have remained solely on paper.

Ministries are not managing their equity interests in commercial companies in accordance with the State Ownership Policy Strategy. The government approved this Strategy in 2020 in response to an earlier audit by the Supreme Audit Office (SAO) from 2015, with the aim of ensuring transparent and effective exercise of ownership rights.

In practice, central government accounting is used only to a limited extent and financial reporting could be simplified. Despite high investments, the state has failed to modernise key areas of its operations. The digitalisation of public administration often merely transfers complex processes to an online environment without truly simplifying them. While the state is building new highways, it has not implemented effective tools to mitigate the damage caused primarily by overloaded freight traffic.

According to its own statement, the Ministry of Regional Development considers the renovation of local roads to be a local issue. Nevertheless, from 2019 through February 2025, it provided municipalities with subsidies totalling CZK 4.7 billion from the state budget for this renovation, supporting a total of 2,150 projects

Measures by the Ministry of Agriculture to address flood damage: insufficient water retention in the landscape

Over the past 27 years, floods have caused a total of 260 billion crowns in damage in the Czech Republic. Flood control measures are intended to prevent extensive damage. The Supreme Audit Office audited CZK 7.1 billion spent by the Ministry of Agriculture between the years 2020 and 2024 on flood protection and water retention in the landscape.
